Make time for Caliraya Springs

It is important to keep the ball on the fairway to get a decent chance to reach the green.

Two and half hours away from Manila are two well-designed golf courses that can easily make it to the country’s Top 25 alongside heavyweights Manila Southwoods in Cavite, Anvaya Cove in Bataan and Luisita in Tarlac, among others.

Problem is: Not many are aware of the existence of the Caliraya Springs Golf Club in Cavinti, Laguna.

The first 18-hole course was built in 2003 by American great Arnold Palmer.

Situated 1,200 feet above sea level, the course measures only 6,788 yards from the tips — short by international standards — but offers a wide variety of challenges for golfers of varied skills.

Palmer used the place’s natural terrain to carve one of his crown jewels in the country. It has generous landing areas for tee shots, but punishes wayward shots that end up in thick grass.

“It is important to keep the ball on the fairway to get a decent chance to reach the green,” said club general manager Jerome Baldoz, credited for keeping the course in pristine condition. The second 18-hole course built by Australian legend Graham Marsh was completed only last year.

“Looking at this year to complete grow in. Warranty works still ongoing,” the club GM said.

Baldoz’s past work as course superintendent came in handy when he joined the club three years ago.
